Scientific lecture marks the first time European government test results
were shared with US audience.

Press Release from Environmental Health Trust
French physician Dr. Marc Arazi presented recently released results of cell phone tests conducted by France’s national government agency ANFR that found most cell phones can emit more radiation into human users than manufacturers report. The France documentation shows that many cell phones on the market can exceed allowable limits by over three times. The cell phone radiation absorption measurements of the over 350 cell phones France tested were presented in an expert scientific symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on July 31, 2017 sponsored by Environmental Health Trust. This lecture marks the first time the test measurements have been presented in the United States by an expert from France.
“In France we have a government agency that has been testing phones next to the body since 2012. We have recently had these results released and they clearly show that most phones—9 out of 10 in 2015—exceed current allowable limits by over 3 times,” stated Arazi.

Although France began testing cell phones in 2012, the measurements were not released until June 1, 2017 after months of pressure from Arazi. The newly released French documents revealed government safety limits are significantly breached when government tests mimicked the real-world scenario of zero distance between the phone and the user—i.e. holding the phone in your bra, shirt or pants pocket, or any other body contact position.

Arazi explained that manufacturers are not required to perform cell phone radiation tests in these direct body contact positions. Instead, manufacturers submit cell phone reports to governments based on radiation tests conducted by placing a specific distance between the phone and the user. Most cell phones are tested at between 10 to 25 mm distance from the body.

Arazi showed how when the government tested phones at body contact, the levels were over seven times higher than the levels when phones were tested at the manufacturer's stated separation distance. This increase resulted in many phones having levels that exceeded the European government's safety limits—levels were over 3 times higher than the limits. However, the phones were still marked as “compliant” because regulations do not require body contact testing.

“This is not just an European issue, it is an international scandal,“ stated Arazi, pointing out that all countries’ regulations are outdated. “Professor Om Gandhi—one of the originators of the test limits 30 years ago—says that if these numbers were converted to the US testing regime, we are talking about the reality that some cell phones exceed US regulatory limits by over 9 times the limit.”

“Dr. Arazi has made history,” stated Devra Davis PhD, MPH, President of the Environmental Health Trust. “His work in calling for transparency has resulted in comprehensive documentation that cell phones would be illegal if they were tested in the way people use them—touching the body.”

Davis points out that for over a decade researchers have repeatedly published about this issue and have long recommended updating “antiquated” cell phone radiation test systems. “Now we have government documentation on hundreds of cell phones providing clear and undeniable evidence that current cell phone test methods fail to protect the public.”

Arazi showed “Phonegate” has made news headlines in countries all over the world. Arazi ended his lecture with a call for immediate updates to European and International regulations regarding cell phone radiation testing methods.

“Tests must include children with consideration for their unique vulnerabilities. Not only are children smaller and thus will have proportionately higher exposures to cell phone radiation than adults but also remember that children’s brains are rapidly developing. Regulations must assure children are protected,” stated Arazi, reiterating the recommendations in the 2016 Government of France national health agency (ANSES) report on “Children’s Health and Radiofrequency,” which first alerted him to the test measurements.

Arazi has coined the issue as “Phonegate” comparing the scandal to the "Dieselgate" Volkswagen scandal. In "Dieselgate," government tests had uncovered real-world car emissions at higher levels than the car manufacturer reported in lab tests. Now government tests of cell phone emissions have uncovered higher radiation exposure levels in real-world scenarios than most cell phone manufacturers report in lab tests.

The July 31, 2017 scientific symposium also included lectures by Anthony Miller MD, Annie Sasco MD, Moe Mellion MD, Iris Udasin MD, Theodora Scarato MSW, and Devra Davis PhD, MPH. Environmental Health Trust plans to post videos of each of these lectures online at ehtrust.org.

About “Let’s Be EcoDigital” project.
“Lets Be EcoDigital”
Twenty one years ago, on 14th June 1996, first mobile phone conversation took place in Poland. Today, it is difficult to imagine life without mobile technologies. There are now nearly 60 million active mobile phones in Poland which means 1.5 cell phone per capita.
The average time spent by Poles online everyday is 4.4 hr at computers and as much as 1.3 hr on mobile equipment. The digital technology keeps developing so rapidly that it leaves no time for additional research on the effects of this development. We already have first reports presenting alarming information on the consequences of uncontrolled access to digitalization.
Right in front of our eyes there has been born a new diagnostic term – e-addictions, we observe, more and more frequently, problems in inter human relations, as our language grows poorer and we lack topics for discussion. There is no motivation to interchange ideas with other people which leads to confinement in one’s own world ( i.e. home or even room) and in consequence, alienation in the peer community or even family. Addiction to computer games results in lack of empathy, loss of ability to function within a group, verbal and physical aggression. The effects of e-addiction can also involve widely understood educational and occupational problems caused by intellectual impairments and neurological problems associated with absence of stimulation of the senses of touch, smell and motor skills that become limited only to the hand. Overuse of the Internet means unhealthy lifestyle – lack of physical activity, sedentary way of life, impairment of sight, back and shoulder pain, sinew contractures and breathing problems related to oxygen deficiency. The project includes also promoting better awareness of electrosmog. Whereas electric and electromagnetic fields of some frequencies have positive effect and are applied, for example, in medicine, other non ionizing frequencies used in radars, telecommunication and cell phones seem to exert more or less detrimental biological influence on plants, animals and also on a human body even in case of exposition to radiation lower than allowed by the applicable standards.
In consideration of the above described aspects of our everyday lives, reflections and interventions of Cracovians, all our activities in this area have been included in the “Let’s Be EcoDigital” project launched under the honorary patronage of Mayor of the City of Krakow.

Cancer Expert Declares Cell Phone and Wireless Radiation as Carcinogenic to Humans

Cancer Expert Declares Cell Phone and Wireless Radiation as Carcinogenic to Humans

Longtime World Health Organization advisor updates opinion linking wireless exposures to cancer based on new scientific evidence.

Press Release from Environmental Health Trust
JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING – An expert cancer researcher and advisor to the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO/IARC) has issued his scientific opinion that radiofrequency (RF) radiation from any source – such as the signals emitted by cell phones, other wireless and cordless and sensor devices, and wireless networks – fully meets criteria to be classified as a “Group 1 carcinogenic to humans” agent, based on scientific evidence associating RF exposure to cancer development and cancer promotion.

“The evidence indicating wireless is carcinogenic has increased and can no longer be ignored,” stated Dr. Anthony B. Miller at a July 31, 2017 lecture in Jackson Hole, Wyoming sponsored by the Environmental Health Trust where international experts presented the best available science on cell phone and wireless radiation. In 2011, WHO/IARC classified RF radiation from any source as a “Group 2B possibly carcinogenic to human” agent. Miller believes the evidence published since 2011 fulfills the requirements to re-classify RF radiation as a “Group 1 carcinogenic to humans” agent.

Miller explained that the basis for his opinion includes recent scientific publications which include the 2017 re-analysis of data from the Interphone study, the 2014 French National CERENAT Study, several new publications on Swedish cancer data, and the 2016 results of the National Toxicology Program.

Dr. Anthony B. Miller is a physician epidemiologist who specializes in cancer etiology, prevention, and screening. Miller is Professor Emeritus at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health of the University of Toronto and Senior Medical Advisor to the Environmental Health Trust. He has been a longtime advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) and was Senior Epidemiologist for the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). He served as Director of the Epidemiology Unit of the National Cancer Institute of Canada, Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at the University of Toronto, Head of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology at the German Cancer Research Centre, and Consultant to the Division of Cancer Prevention of the U.S. National Cancer Institute. He has performed research about electromagnetic fields and cancer and has served on many committees assessing carcinogenicity of various exposures. Miller was visiting Senior Scientist in the IARC Monographs programme as a reviewer to the scientific literature supporting designation of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF-EMF) as a Group 2B possible carcinogen in 2011.

Other experts agree that the increased evidence now establishes RF radiation as a human carcinogen. For example, researchers Dr. Lennart Hardell and Michael Carlberg have published several epidemiological studies that found increased brain cancer associated with long-term cell phone use and conclude that “RF radiation should be regarded as a human carcinogen causing glioma.” In addition, published epidemiological research has also found persons diagnosed with brain cancer had decreased survival rates associated with higher wireless phone use.

In response to skeptics who claim “There is no evidence,” researchers point to published research that has consistently found increased cancer risk in well-designed case control studies that have looked at persons who used cell phones for more than ten years.

The July 31, 2017 panel presentation included international experts. Dr. Annie Sasco presented the WHO/IARC process used to classify carcinogenic agents. Dr. Devra Davis presented research finding wireless radiation results in sperm damage and alters brain development. Dr. Moe Mellion presented Dr. Iris Udasin’s clinical cases of World Trade Center first responders who developed brain cancer after combined environmental exposures to chemical toxins and wireless radiation. Theodora Scarato, MSW presented policies enacted by governments worldwide to reduce RF radiation exposures. Dr. Marc Arazi presented data released by the cell phone radiation test program of the Government of France, which found that when cell phones are tested in body contact positions, RF radiation exposure exceeds regulatory limits. Environmental Health Trust plans to post all lectures and videos from the July 31, 2017 presentation online.

USA Today: Colorado group wants to ban sale of smartphones for kids under 13

Colorado group wants to ban sale of smartphones for kids under 13

One Colorado man has decided that age 13 seems like a good cutoff.
Tim Farnum is leading the charge on a proposed ballot initiative in Colorado that would be the first of its kind in the country. Farnum's proposal would ban the sale of smartphones to children younger than 13, or more likely, to parents who intend to give the smartphone to kids in that age bracket.
Farnum, a Denver-area anesthesiologist, is the founder of Parents Against Underage Smartphones, or PAUS, the nonprofit group pushing the proposal.

Worcester Massachusetts Public Schools Website To Post Precautionary Guidelines on Wi-Fi Radiation

Worcester Massachusetts Public Schools Website To Post Precautionary Guidelines on Wi-Fi Radiation

(Worcester Massachusetts) The Worcester School Committee (WSC) on May 4, 2017 voted to authorize a “Precautionary Options on Radiofrequency Exposure” document regarding reducing exposure to radiation from wireless device use to be posted on the School System’s website and to be prominently posted in all public schools within the  Worcester Massachusetts school system.

The “Precautionary Options” document was developed by the Worcester School administration in response to a request from the WSC Standing Committee on Teaching, Learning and Teaching Supports (TLSS) to address the possible health risks of radiofrequency radiation exposure from wireless devices in the classroom. The document states, that although regulating agencies such as the EPA and the FCC have not established a link between mobile devices and cancer, “...they do offer some suggestions for those that are concerned about Radio Frequency (RF) exposure.”

The document  lists EPA and FDA guidance on how to to reduce exposure to radiofrequency radiation which includes; “Use a speakerphone, earpiece or headset; Increase the distance between wireless devices and your body.  Consider texting rather than talking; Consider not placing the device directly on your lap. Instead consider placing it on a hard surface such as a desk or book”.

The Worcester School Committee “Precautionary Options on Radiofrequency Exposure” can be found at http://wpsweb.com/sites/default/files/www/school_safety/radio_frequency.pdf

TLSS chair, Brian O’Connell says, the precautionary options reflect the Administration’s response to “concerns people may have.” He characterized the document as “a summary of safe and prudent practices”, and an informational statement presented “as a guideline and encouragement for people to think about the issue.”

TLSS vice-chair John Monfredo who called for the vote said, ”It’s time we ... at least acknowledge what health officials and scientists are saying about EMF….Let’s teach our children to use technology responsibly. Let’s do the right thing and be open minded on the issue...We have a moral obligation to our parents and our children to let them know what the research is saying.”

The Worcester Massachusetts School System continues enforcing an unrelated cell phone policy implemented in September 2016. It requires students to keep their phones powered off at all times during the school day to support them in focussing on school matters.

Mr. O’Connell and Mr. Monfredo have championed the cell phone/wi-fi radiation awareness issue since first meeting in August 2016. A retired principal and education columnist for two local publications,  Mr. Monfredo has written several articles about the issue while emphasizing the importance of using technology responsibly. Both School Committee Members have researched the EMF/RF issue and have consistently advised their colleagues about the wisdom of pursuing the Precautionary Principle.
